Generosity FAQ’s

TheGospel&Money

The past couple of weeks I’ve been teaching on how The Gospel transforms the way we view money. Our real problem isn’t with money, it’s with greed, and only The Gospel of Christ can move us to a life of generosity. This past Sunday, I asked Pastor Bill to tag-team teach with me, and I just asked him a bunch of questions I get as a Pastor about money, giving, tithing, etc.

Bill&RozePastor Bill is a former stock broker, real estate agent, teacher, janitor, financial advisor, seminary student and now serves at Impact Church as our Executive Pastor. The Q & A is below. If you’d like to Contact Pastor Bill with any questions, click here.

Q: Why is debt such a big deal?

A: The main thing that stops people from doing what they feel God is calling them to do is usually debt or some sort of financial restriction.

Q: Is it a sin to be in debt?

A: Yes. In Matthew 6, Jesus says that you cannot serve God and money.

Q: What is a tithe?

A: Tithing is giving a percentage of God’s money back to Him through the local church.

Q: Is tithing always 10%

A: It certainly is a good place to start.

Q: What if I can’t afford to tithe?

A: You can’t afford not to tithe. 2 Corinthians 9 says that those who sow little will reap little. It just might be a matter of cutting out other non-essential expenses in your life to be obedient to Christ.

Q: What if I’m scared to give to the church because I literally won’t have enough gas to get to work this week?

A: Get a bike. But seriously, God will honor your faithfulness. Where your treasure is, there your heart is also, Jesus says. In Matthew 6 Jesus tells His followers not to worry about their lives but to seek first the Kingdom of God.

Q: What if I’m giving to other missionaries and causes? Do I still need to give to the local church?

A: Hopefully when you give to your local church you are giving to missionaries and other Kingdom-building causes. However, if you have other missionaries you would like to give to, support your local church first through your tithe and make your other gifts love offerings.

Q: Should I tithe off of my stock or gain of an inheritance?

A: God says to tithe off of the INCREASE. So, any increase you receive, God should get at least 10% of that.

Q: Does Impact Church really miss my tithe or gift? What if it’s only a little bit?

A: No, Impact Church probably won’t miss it at all. But God will. It’s His money. Generosity is a heart and obedience issue.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift! (2 Corinthians 9:6-15 ESV)
